Square Technology and Android Mobile Apps

It’s all about being square when it comes to the latest mobile technology.

One of the most exciting novelties of late is that of Square technology which enables you to ditch the paper and pay for everything on your mobile phone. Square is a literally a little square which you plug into your iPhone and then swipe your credit card through. This can be done to pay for goods of all prices and means that you can pay for breakfast at a greasy spoon or apples at a your local fruit and veg market without handing over any cash! It is truly innovative. But how do you track your transactions I hear your ask? Well, Square has created lots of ways to do this – firstly you get an instant receipt sent to your email or mobile phone after each transaction, which you can access securely. Secondly, Square has developed an interface which allows you, as a business, to view the amount of money you have made in a day including tips, tax, and method of payment. It really couldn’t be simpler. We are loving the fact that this is now available on various platforms such as Android and can be downloaded as an iPhone mobile app. If you are using Square, we would love to hear your feedback.

Finally, the product of the month has to be Amazon’s New Kindle DX. Although it might not change the way we think about e-books, as was first thought a year ago when it was described as the iPod of the e-book world, the Kindle DX certainly has some advantages over the iPad. Here’s how: The iPad can’t be read in direct sunlight and the Kindle can. This is a particular disadvantage over the summer. The Kindle has a very thin third-inch width compared to the iPad’s half-inch size. Plus, the Kindle has a battery life of an entire week on a single charge whilst the iPad gets about 10 hours. The Kindle DX is also noticeably lighter than the iPad. However, the Kindle literally only allows you to read books, what the iPad does is allow you to download mobile apps

On 3rd June, Motorola launched its square mobile phone aimed at youngsters which feats neatly in the palm of your hand or bag. This phone is the latest from Motorola who are having to up their game to keep up with the likes of Sony Ericsson’s range, Dell’s Streak tablet and Samsung’s Galaxy S. This flipout phone runs Google’s Android 2.1 software which enables you to download Android mobile apps and integrate MySpace, Twitter, Facebook and Gmail seamlessly, clever! What we like most about it though, is that for those of us who still can’t get our heads round/don’t want to adjust to the touch screen just yet, this nifty phone has a fold out full five-line Qwerty keyboard…

Android makes some meaty market share gains

Article by Wholesaleeshop.com.au

You know what I’m talking about, right? Every few weeks, a fresh analysis comes out with striking new details about how Android, iOS, and the other smartphone platforms are stacking up. Only every time, the results are basically the same:

Android makes some meaty market share gains. Apple drops a bit, or maybe holds steady. The rest of the not-so-sexy contenders — RIM, Microsoft, whozit and whatzit — hang on for dear life.

That trend’s been repeating reliably for a good couple of years now. So when a study with some new type of insight crosses my desk here at JR Raphael World Headquarters, you’d better believe I sit up and take notice.

Today is one of those enchanting occasions. A new report from Nielsen — the same guys who handle ratings for TV and practically everything else on the planet — finds an interesting shift not just in smartphone market share but also in smartphone desirability. It’s something the Nielsen crew has been measuring for some time now, but this marks a rare instance where we see a noteworthy change.

The change, in a nutshell, is that Android has now surpassed iOS in terms of consumer desirability. Or, in other words, more smartphone buyers are lusting after an Android than eyeing an iPhone.

The difference itself isn’t enormous, mind you, but what it represents is arguably quite large. According to Nielsen, 31 percent of mobile consumers surveyed from January to March of this year said they wanted an Android device. That’s up from 26 percent in the previous period, in late 2010. Thirty percent, meanwhile, said they wanted an Apple mobile device in the most recent analysis — down from 33 percent in the late-2010 window.

Here’s why that’s significant: In all the months we’ve been measuring Android’s astronomical rise, there have always been hoards of skeptical explanations about what’s happening and why. The most common comment I see is the “Android’s only winning because it’s cheap” theory — the hypothesis that people really want iPhones but settle for Android phones because their carriers offer good sales.

Nielsen’s new study, in asking what mobile operating system consumers want, lends credit to the notion that — yep — plenty of folks pick Android phones for more than just their price. We’re looking at desirability here, after all. The “cool” factor. What triggers that “gotta have it” impulse deep within your noggin.

According to Nielsen, that factor is staying consistent with sales. The stat fiends found a full half of people who bought a smartphone in the past six months went with Android. Only a quarter took the iPhone route.

That brings us to interesting point number two: something I like to call the “wait for…” variable. The “wait for…” variable is the tendency for people to write off Android’s gains by saying that some Apple product looming in the future will turn everything around. “Wait for the iPhone 4″ was a popular one for a long time — the theory that, in the months leading up to Apple’s revelation of the iPhone 4, potential buyers were merely waiting for the latest and greatest product to arrive before dropping their dollars and getting on-board the iTrain. (Spoiler: It didn’t work out like that.)

More recently, the “wait for…” variable has revolved around the Verizon iPhone: Apple’s stagnation compared to Android’s climb was simply a result of the iPhone’s AT&T shackles, countless commenters contended. Once the iPhone hit Verizon, they theorized, Apple’s mobile market share would skyrocket.

The Verizon iPhone launched in early February. We’ve seen numerous analyses indicating its sales did little to move Apple’s smartphone market share needle. Nielsen’s new data reinforces that notion — and, just as important, suggests that all signs point to the same trend continuing in the months to come.http://www.wholesaleeshop.com.au/android-tablet-pc/

(I know, I know: The iPhone 5/iPhone 6/iPhone SuperDuperMagicalEdition will change everything. So will the T-Mobile/Sprint iPhone that’s absolutely-definitely-positively right around the corner. Just remember: We’ve seen these revolutionary “wait for…” situations before. So far, the balance hasn’t shifted back.)http://www.wholesaleeshop.com.au/laptop-battery/

Vital Considerations for an Android Developer

There are a number of methods that an expert can use to make a legitimate living. A considerable option for software developers is becoming an Android developer. This could be the best decision that one ever makes. The option helps one to become his own boss and make programs of his choice. Nonetheless, it is imperative to understand that not every professional reaps the full benefits of this option. A number of prior preparations ought to be made for one to benefit fully. Below are a number of things that one has to look at when planning on joining the iPhone development program.

To get into iPhone development, the first thing that one needs to do is buy a Mac. This has been known to be the best computer for developers. It is more favorable when it comes to multimedia file handling. In addition to that, a Mac computer is designed by the manufacturer of iPhone, Apple. This means that it is more favorable when it comes to the development of applications relating to the iPhone. The secret to becoming a reliable Android developer is to get the best tools and platforms. The computer has to be fast and well equipped to handle the desired needs.

Second, the right software in development should be acquired before taking the step to be an Android developer. Every application runs on a specified podium. This means that the use of the wrong software can lead into frustrations when creating an application. A research on the best software to use is advised. The market is filled with tons of software that people can choose from. However, it is important to understand that some are more reliable than others. When it comes to iPhone development, downloading the free Apple Software Development Kit is advised. This will help run the applications more reliably.

Another thing that one needs to do is to gain a deeper understanding in how to use the development language. Not every application uses a familiar markup language. A profound understanding in object orient programming language is advised. A recommended language is the C and C++. This will help apply all the desired specifications to achieve the desired goal reliably. With limited understanding in iPhone development language, one ends up creating undesired applications that are incomprehensive. Enrolling into a programming school is advised. This will help gain a firsthand understanding in markup languages which will help create appealing applications after becoming an Android developer. Practice should also be done and more tips acquired from friends and relatives.

Lastly, the right channel has to be used to avoid being sued or prosecuted in any way. This is what calls for the need for one to register with the official manufacturer. Apple requires a one time fee of $ 99 to join the program in iPhone development. The developer should hence be ready to go through the process and have the money at hand. It is only through signing up with the official developer that one becomes a legitimate Android developer. Every person interested in this option must go through registration for validation purposes. This will help elude future frustrations.

Areas That iPhone 4 Still Crumble to Android

Since the World Wide Developers Conference, the iPhone has been given no life and its being called the iPhone 4. It is true that when Apple does something, it does it well. Lets get one thing straight; this article is not meant to take away from anyone who plans to get the iPhone 4 but someone has to point out its flaws. After all, Jobs would never do such a thing.

So how can such a great device still crumble to Android? Its all about the limitations; Apples biggest issue.

From Apple – “People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With the tap of a button, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories – iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.”

Apple is right about one thing, we have been dreaming about this for decades. However, Apple cant take credit for this one. The HTC Evo 4g has accomplished this before Apple. Not only have they accomplished it first but wi-fi is not a necessity in order to make a call. Thats right, 3G is more than enough to hand its users a decent video quality call. This gives the Evo 4G’s video calling a more practical edge over the iPhone 4. The Evo 4G also works with Skype.

Retina Display

Apple says- “Thanks to the Retina display, everything you see and do on iPhone 4 looks amazing. Text in books, web pages, and email is crisp at any size. Images in movies and photos are stunning at almost any angle. That’s because the Retina display’s pixel density is so high, your eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels.”

From what we have seen so far, the display on the iPhone 4 is gorgeous. However, who has been complaining? This is not to say that innovation isn’t good because it is. How about innovation on a larger scale? Why couldn’t they make the screen a little larger for extended comfort when watching those soon to be Netflix videos? Apple has always been the one to make their users compromise. This time its by having the same size screen you’ve always had that just looks better. Why cant iPhone users have a bigger screen AND higher revolution. While the larger Android screens may or may not compare to that of the iPhone 4, its not a factor for me. Ive never really cared that my cable was a little fuzzy, i just wanted to see the whole picture.

Apple says- “Now you can run your favorite third-party apps – and switch between them instantly – without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.* This smarter approach to multitasking is available only on iPhone.”

Brilliant Apple! Now, how do I stop it? Thats the one question that has been nagging me since the combination of the WWDC and AT&T’s plan changes. Apple never discussed how one can quite multitasking. With apps running and consuming data in the background on AT&T’s new plans? That spells danger and hard earned money. Android has app killers. Also, Android runs on networks with unlimited data plans. So even if you wanted to multi task your phone to death (crash) you don’t have to worry about over charges. I pray for the consumers of tomorrow that the iPhone will.

Apple says- “Never miss a photo opportunity. The 5-megapixel camera built into iPhone 4 captures amazingly detailed images. A built-in LED flash illuminates low-light scenes. And the 5x digital zoom gets you closer to the action. You can even shoot self-portraits with the front camera.”

HTC Evo 4G. The only difference is that it has an 8 mega pixel camera. Android has always had zoom. We also have the low light for video shooting. Self-portraits are currently available while iPhone 4 isn’t.

Apple says- “Make room for more apps. Thanks to the App Store, you can choose from over 200,000 apps and games. But these apps can fill your Home screens pretty quickly. That’s where the new Folders feature comes in. It gives you an easy way to keep your apps organized and declutter your Home screens. And you can launch your favorite apps with a couple of taps.”

Since the G1 first existed this was possible but don’t think for a second that iPhone 4 has rived Android here. They got the folder thing down packed but don’t forget about the live folders. A live folder is a folder that automatically updates itself with information. For example if you have a Facebook address folder with the ever changing information from Facebook that folder will automatically update any information changed from Facebook right on your home screen.

Home Screen

Apple says- “Personalize your Home screen. You can change the background wallpaper on both your Lock screen and your Home screen. Choose from a variety of backgrounds included with your iPhone or select any picture from your library. It’s a great way to make iPhone uniquely yours.”

Holy America Batman! Apple just became less communistic!

Wallpapers….nice. Not only has Android accomplished this since the G1, we now have 3D wallpapers. Wallpapers that react with your touch. Apple likes to play as if its ‘innovating’ in every area that it operates in when its a big fat lie. They do a lot of great innovations but not in everything they do. There just play catch up.

Don’t forget about widgets! Widgets are not available for iPhone. Widgets are apps that are ran directly on the home screen for complete customization and usage.

Apple says – “Tap (or speak) to call. To make a call on iPhone, tap a name or number. That’s it. You can tap to call from just about anywhere: a name in your contacts list, a number on a website or text message, even a phone number on a map listing. Voice Control lets you speak a name or number to make a call. And you can switch between calls, merge calls, or add up to five callers with a tap”

Android does this. I’m actually getting tired of saying that. Its slowly becoming a cleche. Not only does Android do this but Android has native text to speech in EVERY application that requires you to speak. The best part about this is you don’t even have to touch your phone to activate it. Simply set up your “start listening” protocol and complete voice operation of your phone available in different languages and also offers translation.

Apple says-”Surf faster. Surf more. You’ll love surfing the web with Safari on iPhone 4. Thanks to the superfast Apple A4 processor, web pages render quickly, so you can do more browsing in less time. And the high-resolution Retina display renders pages beautifully, with perfectly crisp text and bright, vivid graphics.”

Android has the fastest browser. Tested. We also have flash. It can be turned on and off just like on Firefox. Options, options, options.

Maps and Compass

Apple says- “Find yourself. Say you’re in an unfamiliar neighborhood looking for a nearby restaurant. With iPhone, you can pinpoint your location on a map so you can figure out how to get there from where you are. iPhone 4 finds your location quickly and accurately using a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular towers. As you move, iPhone updates your location automatically. And when you arrive, you can drop a pin to mark your location and share it with others via email or MMS.”

Android does all of this. Plus Android has a FREE voice, turn by turn navigation standard. Apple is just play catch up.

In a world that Android already does; iPhone is catching up

iPhone or Android Application Development? Check Developer’s Preference

From the 0.9 preview SDK to the latest version of Android 4.0, Android marked a journey of rapid development manifesting its talent in the global market. Casting off some of the leading mobile business organizations, Android mobile application development acquired the second largest market share globally. A lot changed since 2007; however, one thing that hasn’t is the rapid pace at which new tools, resources and information are becoming available to developers.

So far, Android has been supportive. It launched its first set of classes to demonstrate best practices behind building great apps. Moreover, experts are constantly working towards helping developers through its latest Android design site. The site includes comprehensive information and the list of do’s and don’ts while creating an app for Android and multiple platforms. Along with constant instructions to developers about its new features, the site also makes sure that Android developers from the world over should connect and post tips to solidify the platform’s base. Google Hangout is now available for Android community to help them all interact closely.

If you ask developers which platform is better, the iPhone or Android, developers reply saying “it depends”. Although Android has a major demand and half the market share, the preferable platform for application development depends on three major factors: Ease of development, application approval and revenue generation.

Apple or Android Application Development: Ease of Development

Android is a Java-dependent platform that allows people with Java background develop with ease. However, iPhone adopts the much older Objective C language, which is comfortable and easy to apply even in the most complex scenarios. Remember, Java collects the garbage for you, but in case of iPhone, you have to clean it manually.

According to the CEO of DoApp, a third-party developer of branded mobile apps, Android causes fragmentation. According to him, different phone makers style the UI in a different way; therefore, creating an Android app compatible with all its versions and backward compatibility is possible, but time consuming. On the contrary, iPhone provides hardware uniformity.

Market Acceptance

While iPhone takes a long time to approve the application, Android’s procedure is rather simple and quick. iPhone has an arbitrary strategy for approval or disapproval of the app and abruptly takes it off from the market with no intimation or appropriate reasoning. In case of Android, everything is acceptable by default due to its open market nature. However, Android reserves the right to pull.

Getting the Sale

Apple or iPhone market remains effective. Once an app enters the iPhone market, it app monetizes rapidly. The Apple store is well-managed and acts as a game-changer for many. When surveyed for Android marketplace, about 82 percent people said that the marketplace doesn’t have an effective design due to which many apps go unnoticed.

The mobile industry is occupied with two giants-Apple and Android development company. Rest, including Windows and Blackberry, are finding it hard to sell their devices and are constantly thriving for space. Those developers keen on writing applications for multiple platforms must start with iPhone.

Grey Matter India (GMI) Technologies Pvt. Ltd.is a leading IT services and solutions provider that excels at providing Android mobile application development and other mobile applications development.

Android tablets, iPads push up mobile commerce

Article by Tariq Saeedi

Mobile commerce is really exploding with the independent researchers forecasting its growth rate at whopping 30 per cent per annum since not only shopaholics but shoppers in general also find it convenient to pick up their Android tablets, iPads, or iPhones to make purchases of as little as deals/coupons and as big as consumer electronics.

The meteoric growth is attributed to upswing in iPads usage in online shopping and popularity of other modern devices.

The mobile platforms are being used even for purchase of consumer electronics of popular brands of Samsung, Nokia, Toshiba, etc. as the retailers are partnering with the mobile optimized sites as well as launching easily navigable mobile apps.

True, currently accounting for negligible percentage points of ecommerce and brick and mortar businesses, mobile commerce has to go a long way to become a commonplace. However, Forrester predicts the revenue will reach $ 31 billion by 2016.

Forrester Research Mobile Commerce Forecast 2011 to 2016 included mobile media and content, retail, travel, coupons, and service and not ring tones and games.

The forecasts regarding mobile payments from eBay and PayPal must be pretty much encouraging for the investors and business to consumers (B2C) and business to business (B2B) ventures introducing apps to facilitate financial transactions via smartphones, android tablets, or iPads.

The online retailer predicts it would record eight billion dollars in mobile gross merchandise volume (GMV) in 2012 while its payment gateway, PayPal, would separately register seven billion dollars in payment transactions taking place in mobile environment.

Being the world’s leader in online payment transactions, the payment engine provides services in 25 currencies across 190 countries. On the other hands, San Jose-based eBay claims to be the world’s largest marketplace that recorded buying and selling of staggering $ 62 billion goods in 2010.

Daily deal sites offering digital coupons and promotional discounts/deals to their subscribers also extend services to the mobile users through mobile apps, which allow consumers to participate in group buying while on the go.

Internet auction sites and digital retail catalogues also provide customers with the mobile apps to browse and buy products via handheld devices/internet enabled handsets.

The positive response of consumers encourages retailers, white label service providers, daily deal sites and aggregators to build infrastructure that supports multiple mobile environments. The applications are specifically designed for android, iOS, etc.

Groupon’s clones like BuyWithMe, Eversave, Giltcity, etc. have developed or are in the process of developing mobile apps to enable customer grab mobile deals of cuisines, spas, beauty and fitness, etc.

Native mobile apps act as discounts detectors guided by GPS as they send alerts to the device when a user is nearing in-store specials. Users can also cast around products/bargains by inserting zip code in the given bar.

Mobile commerce will continue to grow with the usage of android tablets and iPads surging. According to NDP, 72.7 million tablet computers were sold in 2011, up gigantically 252 per cent over 2010. Of that, apple sold 38.1 million iPads. The company is expected to sell 116.4 million iPhones and 54.6 million iPads this year.

Android Tablet Operating System Structure

Article by JennaSterling

Tablet computers have a niche that is between Smartphones and laptops. Tablets have higher processing speed compared to Smartphones but much slower than the computing power in laptops and personal computers. In this article we consider the android tablets and how they function

The tablet market has two primary philosophies regarding designs. First there is apple which has control over the entire design of the device hardware and the user interface. This is how iPads are designed. On the other hand several manufactures design the hardware and leave the operating system or the user interface to Google. This how Android tablets are design. If you look for stylish design and aesthetic operating system then Apple’s iPads are better, but when you like tweaking and changing themes then android tablets are suitable for you.

There are numerous varieties of Android tablet on the market. Most of these tablets feature the following hardware components. They have a processor, memory chips, storage chips, GPS receiver, Fm tuner and sensors. Specific Android tablets may have many other components but the architecture is basically the same. The hardware requires software to run. All software are contained in the operating system. The operating system can be visualized as having seven layers known as software known as software stark. The top layer has all user interface elements that allow the user to interact with the operating system. The bottom layer has those applications which interact with the device hardware and the operating system.

The android stark starts with the hardware stack at the bottom with physical components such as processors, sensors and circuit boards. Above this layer is the kernel of firmware. It controls and manages hardware resources. Android’s kernel is based on the Linux 2.6 open source operating system. Androids’ libraries come next on top of the kernel. Libraries are a collection of instructions that the device executes when processing different types of data. The software stark is next to the libraries but on this layer. It has core libraries required in the execution of java based applications. The android virtual machine is also present on this layer. Its function is to create a virtual operating system environment. Its main use is to ensure that each android application process runs independently from the other. It also acts as a memory manager.

The next layer is called the application frame work. It provides the foundation for all Android tablet applications. It acts as a liaison between the operating system and all other applications. Google provide guidelines for application developers on how to build applications that can run on this layer in Android application programming interface. The developers therefore have to learn only the rules set down by the API and not hardware specification and configuration of each device. Finally, the top layer has the user interface and all other applications.
